Minnesota State Bar Association
Task Force on Foreign Language Translation
February 20, 2008, 3:30 – 5 p.m.
MSBA Offices
Agenda
1. Welcome and introductions
2. Questions for the Task Force to consider
- Should the MSBA permit the practice? Encourage it?
- Does this raise any copyright issues as the copyright in the English language forms is owned by the MSBA?
- Must the MSBA stance be dependent on who authored the form? In other words, what intellectual property issues might be raised?
- Should each section/committee tackle this issue or should the MSBA have a unified policy?
- If permitted, what, if any, should the MSBA’s role be in providing or paying for translation/translation aids?
- What format is best? A translation or an aid to translation?
- Should the practice be limited to Spanish?
- Should the MSBA develop criteria for outside translation services?
- If permitted, who should have access to the translation materials? Members only? Non-profits working with clients who might benefit? The general public?
- If permitted, how should currency be maintained?
- What form should the translation take?
