MSBA approves minority clerkship program

The Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) recently unanimously approved creation of the Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program.
The goal of the summer clerkship program, proposed earlier this year by the MSBA’s Diversity Committee, is to promote the placement of students of color in settings where diverse students and attorneys traditionally have been underrepresented and to assist employers who are interested in diversifying their legal staff. (See “MSBA committee proposes minority clerkship program,” in the May 30, 2005, issue of Minnesota Lawyer.) Through the program, students of color who have completed their first year of law school will be matched with legal employers throughout the Twin Cities.
Co-chair of the Diversity Committee Marta M. Chou, who participated in a similar clerkship program in Wisconsin in 2001, is thrilled with the level of support the program is receiving in Minnesota. “We are extremely excited to bring this Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program to the Minnesota legal community and are overwhelmed with the level of interest already shown by area legal employers,” Chou recently told Minnesota Lawyer.
According to Chou, the program offers legal employers the opportunity to expose law students to different practice areas and corporate cultures while benefiting from having “talented, motivated and diverse students” in their offices. “This program goes a long way towards increasing the diversity within area legal employers’ offices and within the overall legal community,” she said.
The Diversity Committee is now actively recruiting law firms, governmental agencies and corporations to participate in the program. For more information, contact Chou at (612) 349-8569 or mmchou@rkmc.com
