Kayaking

2nd Annual Kayaking with the Judge
Wednesday, June 24 – 2:00 – 5:00 pm
Join Judge Robert Awsumb for kayaking on the St. Louis River. You, the Judge and guides from the University of Minnesota-Duluth will discover the unique natural and cultural history of the Lower St. Louis River, the United States’ largest Lake Superior tributary. The activity will begin with a basic introduction and incorporate on water instruction throughout the three to six mile tour. We will paddle rain or shine and the weather conditions of the day will determine the degree of difficulty. $45 per person; includes everything you need including life jacket and kayak. Space is limited; register early. Any questions contact Judge Awsumb at robert.awsumb@courts.state.mn.us or 651/266-8193.
Read about the fun from last year's kayakers:
Kayaking with Judge Awsumb was one of the fun highlights of the 2008 Bar Convention in Duluth for me. We were outfitted and guided by experienced UMD students and they provided paddling and safety instructions for the novice kayakers. I have kayaked a number of years and I learned a new stroke technique. Sea kayaks are very stable and safe (unlike white water boats). Try it and you will have some great fun and stories to tell.
- Mark Chapin, Hennepin County Attorney’s Office
Kayaking with the Judge was a major highlight for me during last year's convention. It's a great way to get to know other lawyers and judges in a very casual and fun setting, while getting some exercise and seeing some beautiful scenery. I encourage people to make this a part of your convention experience!

My wife, 14 year old son and 9 year old daughter and I took advantage of the kayaking opportunity last year in Duluth at the Bar Convention and while the wind did not cooperate with the kayaking, we all as novices had a great time and this year when we go to the BWCA my wife will be using a Kayak instead of a canoe. I encourage anyone who enjoys the outdoors, friendly people and novelty exercise to consider this activity. It was worth the time and effort.

If you like being in the water without getting wet, you should try kayaking. The trip is scenic and quiet, appropriate for all ages and abilities.
