Governance Committee
Welcome to the Governance
Committee of the MSBA Assembly. Yes, contrary to an earlier email, you
have been assigned to the Governance Committee, not the Policy Committee.
Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
As stated previously, all
Assembly committees will meet at 1:30 on Friday, September 17 during the Bar
Leader Conference. Items included on the Governance Committee Agenda
include:
- Can alternates serve
on Assembly Committees?
- Does the Lavender Bar
have a seat in the 2004-05 Assembly?
- Request of the
Probate and Trust Law Section to amend its bylaws.
- Election of LawPAC
Trustees – Current MSBA Bylaws indicated trustees will be elected by the
Assembly (Section 4.1) and the LawPAC Constitution approved on April 16, 2004
calls for election by the Executive
Committee/Council (Article V B 5) or in the
event of a resignation election by the Executive
Committee/Council with ratification by the
Board of Governors/Assembly (Article V B 12).
- Board of
Governors/Assembly members – Will their term counts carry over? (For example, if someone has served on
the Board of Governors for three years, are they eligible to serve on the
Assembly for six years or three?)
- How will the
alternate representative provisions be enforced in the 2004-05
year?
- Council at-large
members – Are the current terms of the at-large members one-year terms or are
they the initial two-year terms outlined in Section 7.42 of the Revised
Bylaws?
- Council
representatives from the minority bar association, MWL and New Lawyers Section
– Can these entities be required/encouraged to indicate the length of the term
(not more than three years) when the representative is
named?
And, scheduling future meetings of the Governance Committee.
Obviously all of these items cannot be completed in a half an hour. Please
bring your calendar to the meeting and the Committee can develop a meeting plan
for the year.
Feel free to contact me with any questions.
