Introduction
The purpose of the MSBA Grassroots Action Network is to inform
MSBA members about legislative issues so that they
can in turn influence their legislators and other policymakers.
In order to make important legislative decisions, elected officials
need advice on legislation from informed constituents – you!
Thus, your position in the legal field makes you uniquely qualified
to offer your expertise on a wide range of issues affecting
the law and the community.
MSBA members who are willing
to participate are encouraged to sign up to become MSBA Grassroots
Action Network Delegates. As a Delegate, you are able to educate
lawmakers on issues impacting the Minnesota justice system and
the legal profession while adding vital support to the MSBA
lobbying efforts.
Grassroots Delegates and Advocacy
Being a Delegate means that you are willing to write and/or call
your state senator or representative when an important issue affecting
the legal community arises in Minnesota. When you sign up as a MSBA
Delegate, you understand the important role you play in the legislative
process.
Here are the efforts that will make you a successful and effective
Delegate:
- Contact your state representative or state senator when requested
on MSBA legislative priority issues.
- Forward to MSBA staff a copy of your legislative communication.
- Tell your legal colleagues about the MSBA Grassroots Action
Network program and encourage them to sign up as a Delegate.
- Periodically check the Grassroots Events calendar for news
on upcoming meetings and attend scheduled MSBA meetings with your
legislator throughout the state.
- Invite your legislator to speak at your organization’s
events (i.e. luncheons, dinners, CLE's).
- Make sure you are registered to vote.
