The MSBA's Animal Law Section Presents
"First Do No Harm: Drafting Petitions for Orders for Protection that Protect Victims of Domestic Violence and Their Companion Animals "
Minnesota's new law to allow companion animals to be included in orders for protection went into effect August 1, 2010. Learn what you need to know about domestic violence and drafting orders for protection to make effective use of this law for your clients.
Whether you have been practicing law for twenty years in a private firm or whether you have been practicing twenty days in a volunteer legal clinic, you likely do not know all you could know about writing effective petitions for orders for protection. Even if you write orders for protection every day, you likely do not know all you could know about including pets in orders for protection and finding temporary safe shelter for your client’s pets.
Errors and omissions in our filings with the court can result in lost time, lost opportunity, and loss of funds for our clients. When our clients are victims of domestic violence, however, errors and omissions can mean a lot more – they can mean life or death.
