Exploring Careers in Business Law

Hear from a diverse group of business lawyers, including in-house counsel, corporate and nonprofit counsel, governmental counsel, and business executives about the array of opportunities available to those with a law degree and an interest in business. Learn what they do, why they love what they do, and what you can do to prepare yourself for a successful career in law and business.

A reception with appetizers and beverages will follow the program. Members of the Business Law Section are encouraged to attend and share their experiences and advice with law students interested in a career in business law.

Heidi Christianson (Panel Moderator) Nilan Johnson Lewis, P.A. 
Heidi Christianson is a partner at Nilan Johnson Lewis, P.A. where she counsels nonprofit corporations, including health care, higher education, and other tax exempt organizations regarding tax and corporate matters.

Special Guest: Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie,
Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State
Mark Ritchie is Minnesota’s 21st Secretary of State, elected in 2006. Ritchie partners with township, city, and county officials to organize elections on behalf of Minnesota’s 3.7 million eligible voters. Ritchie also oversees a wide range of services for Minnesota businesses provided by the Office of Secretary of State, including the archiving of official documents.

Bert Black, Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State
From 1979 to 1981, Bert was the Reporter for the Minnesota Corporation Law Task Force. Bert’s notes appear throughout the comments in the annotated versions of Minnesota Statutes Chapters 301A and 317A. Bert joined the Office of the Secretary of State in 1981 as the Director of Business Services; since 1999 he has also been the Business and Legal Analyst for the Secretary of State.

Dennis Knoer, Briggs and Morgan PA
Dennis is a shareholder in the firm of Briggs and Morgan’s Minneapolis office. In his practice, Dennis serves as outside general counsel to a number of privately held companies, providing counsel and guidance on matters relating to mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, risk management, business contracts, general corporate law, and shareholder conflict resolution.

Jennifer Reedstrom Bishop, Gray Plant Mooty Mooty & Bennett PA
Jennifer, a Principal at Gray Plant Mooty in Minneapolis is Chair of the Gray Plant Mooty Health and Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group and specializes in working with tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations. She provides legal advice to nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions and health care entities in all aspects of their business and has a special focus on working with foundations and nonprofit organizations engaged in social enterprise and entrepreneurial activities.

Jennifer Santini, Sykora & Santini PLLP
Jennifer Santini is a 2009 graduate of New England School of Law in Boston. During law school, Jen worked full time in the legal departments of two investment management companies in Boston, first at Putnam Investments and then at MFS Investment Management. At both companies, Jen focused on securities regulations and complying with the SEC and FINRA. In 2010, Jen formed her own firm, Sykora & Santini, which focuses on general business law and estate planning.

1 hour of Professional Development CLE credit will be applied for.
