So You Want to Be a Judge?
A Candid Conversation about what
it is like and how to get there.

Admit it:  There have been times where you have thought about becoming a judge.  Maybe you even put in an application.  You know the image that goes with being a judge, but how much do you really know about the work you do as a judge?

If you are thinking about someday applying for a judgeship, if you are actively applying, or if you are just curious about what judges do and how they get appointed, this session is for you.

The session will focus on two topics key to understanding what judges do and how to become one:

What is it actually like to be a judge, including:

    • the work you do as a judge;
    • the skills necessary to be an effective judge;
    • the best parts of being a judge;
    • the worst parts of being a judge;
    • the differences between judging in the metro area and greater Minnesota; and
    • the common misconceptions about being a judge.

How the selection process really works, including:

    • qualities that the Governor and Commission value most;
    • ways to enhance your candidacy;
    • effective (and ineffective) applications;
    • effective (and ineffective) interviews; and
    • insight into the actual decision making process.

The panel of judges and members of the Commission on Judicial Selection who will discuss these topics include:

Lee Sheehy, Chair of the Commission on Judicial Selection
Margaret Chutich, Former at-large member of the Commission, recently appointed to the Court of Appeals
The Honorable Kathleen Gearin, Chief Judge of the Second Judicial District
The Honorable Peter Irvine, Chief Judge of the Seventh District
The Honorable Mary Yunker, Sherburne County District Court judge
The Honorable Laurie Miller, Hennepin County District Court judge

Hennepin County District Court Judge Jay Quam will moderate the discussion.
