Programs
Certification
The Section was instrumental in developing and implementing the process
for certification of trial lawyers as civil trial specialists. At the
suggestion of the Section, the MSBA established the Certification
Council, the body that administers the system for designating Certified
Civil Trial Law specialists. It administers twice yearly tests, monitors
periodic recertification and has developed program logos and client brochures.
Judicial Development
An important focus of the Section has been to support training
and development programs for the judiciary. In 1990, the Section reinvigorated
a statewide system of judicial development.
Quarterly Luncheons
The Section continues to provide high quality education for Section members..
For many years, the Section has sponsored luncheon seminars featuring
timely topics and interesting speakers, including members of the judiciary
and top litigators. The luncheons provide a great opportunity to catch
a quick bite, listen to an interesting speaker, and earn CLE credits at
a reasonable cost.
Midyear, Annual Meetings
The Section serves as a cosponsor, with Minnesota CLE, of the annual Civil
Litigation Institute. The Institutes have included an inside view of headline-making
cases as well as break-out sessions on hot topics such as conducting in-house
investigations, working with experts, participating in ADR, and understanding
the latest changes to the state and federal rules. The Institutes also
provide an opportunity to network with colleagues from all parts of the
state. The Section frequently sponsors a program at the annual MSBA Convention
as well.
Projects
The Section has developed a program to make trial court decisions available
electronically over this web site.
The Section has recently created a guide to Minnesota Statutes of Limitations.
The guide provides a single source for all of the various limitations
periods that govern civil claims under Minnesota law and is available
without charge to section members.
