"Breaking down the barriers of communication: Working with non-English speaking clients"

As immigration attorneys, we often represent clients who do not speak English as a first language. This CLE will look at common issues that

come up when dealing with non-English speaking clients as well as offering a forum to discuss possible solutions. Topics that will be covered include: *Initial client meetings *Getting information from your client *Keeping your client informed *Use of official and informal interpreters *Going to court. Please come prepared to share your experiences, frustrations, work-arounds and solutions.

Speakers:

Sally Nichols 
Sally Nichols is a federal and state certified Spanish language interpreter with extensive experience with freelance and court interpreting. Ms. Nichols was the staff interpreter at EOIR in Bloomington for eight years.

Nadia Smith 
Nadia Najarro Smith is a Spanish language certified court interpreter and translator with extensive legal education and experience. She provides interpreting and translation services in Minnesota courts and a variety of other legal settings. A former law professor and practicing attorney, Ms. Najarro Smith had a distinguished legal career in her native country of Guatemala.

Abdinasir Abdulahi 
Abdinasir Abdulahi operates his own practice at Law Office of Abdinasir Abdulahi, where he works on immigration, criminal defense, family law and personal injury cases.  Mr. Abdulahi received his law degree in Ethiopia, his LL.M. at the University of Minnesota Law School, and his JD at William Mitchell Law School. Mr. Abdulahi previously was a judge at the Supreme Court of a State Court in Ethiopia, and worked with SMRLS here in St. Paul, MN.  He has extensive experience with non-English speaking clients, particularly Somali and Amharic speakers.

Cancellation Policy:

Refunds will be processed for cancellation requests received in writing on or before noon on the registration deadline. Requests should be directed to the event contact person listed at the bottom of this notice. Cancellation requests received after this time are not eligible for refunds. You may send a colleague in your place if you are unable to join us and the registration deadline has passed.
