Other Section Accomplishments
We instituted a number of new programs and offerings this year.

  • In an effort to promote fellowship within the Section, the Section sponsored its First Annual Section Happy Hour on September 27, 2012.  The event was well attended.
  • In an effort to provide educate law clerks on employment law topics, and to offer them the opportunity to receive free CLE credits, the Section opened up its seminars and agency training sessions to law clerks with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, as well as local district courts.   This program has been well received.
  • In an effort to provide relevant pro bono opportunities to Section members, the Section began two new initiatives this year: (1) a partnership program with Minnesota Volunteer Lawyers Network to provide telephone pro bono services to individuals seeking assistance with labor and employment issues; and (2) a partnership program with the Minnesota Court of Appeals to provide pro bono assistance to persons who have sought to bring pro se unemployment compensation appeals.

In addition, the Section continued a number of ongoing, successful initiatives this year.  For example, continuing this Section’s strong tradition of reaching out to law students, the Labor & Employment Section hosted its annual law student outreach reception on February 5, 2013.  As in past years, this reception featured a panel of lawyers in various areas of practice who discussed their careers.  The event was very successful, and the great attendance by Section members was appreciated by the students and the Governing Council.  The Section also recognized outstanding labor law and employment law students from the four area law students at its Annual Meeting and Spring Dinner.

Finally, the Section continued to publish its Labor & Employment Law Newsletter.

Annual Meeting and Election Results

The Section’s Annual Meeting was held on May 16, 2013 at the Walker Art Center.  Approximately 105 people attended.  In attendance were U.S. District Court Judge David Doty, Chief Judge  Matthew Johnson from the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and NLRB Regional Director Marlin Osthus.   The event was well received, and included an opportunity to view the galleries, a social hour, dinner, business meeting, awards presentations, and keynote address by Dean Robert Vischer from the University of St. Thomas College of Law.    Ellen Sampson was awarded the Leonard Lindquist Distinguished Service Award.
