PUBLIC LAW SECTION
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING
August 12, 2008
Minneapolis City Attorney’s Office
MEMBERS PRESENT: Barry Greller, Diane Alshouse, Todd Schoffelman, Mary Miller,
Jim Alexander, Kim Buechel Mesun, Dana Banwer, Inta Sellars (by telephone), and
Michael Goodwin.
MEMBERS EXCUSED: John Choi, Tom Kalitowski, Greg Brooker, Nancy McLean
MEMBERS ABSENT:
COMMITTEE CHAIRS PRESENT: Carol Lansing.
MSBA LIAISON PRESENT:
Co-Chair Barry Greller called the meeting to order.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the May 2008 and June 2008, Public Law
Section Council meetings were approved.
CO-CHAIRS’ REPORT: Barry Greller presented the Co-Chairs’ Report:
Barry reported briefly on the MSBA Convention in Duluth in June 2008. Several
council members attended.
Barry reported that some time ago he returned a call about assisting members of the Iowa Bar who were affected by the recent flooding. Barry never heard anything further as to what assistance is needed. It was agreed that no further action is needed on this issue at
this time.
Barry raised the question of whether the Public Law Section should be taking some action to express concern about the cut in funding to the Public Defenders offices. Diane Alshouse will draft a motion to be presented at the September 2008 meeting.
A draft of the Public Law Section goals were distributed which will be discussed at the September 2008 meeting.
Barry asked for a volunteer to serve as the Public Law Section membership coordinator.
TREASURER’S REPORT: No report. Kim Buechel Mesun has not received the end of
the year financial statement from the MSBA.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
a. Awards – No report.
b. Community and Public Service – No report.
c. CLE – Mary mentioned that Todd Schoffelman is now the CLE coordinator.
Members were encouraged to submit ideas for CLE’s to be presented and/or cosponsored by the Public Law Section for the upcoming year. Mary mentioned
that the PLS should consider sponsoring an ethics CLE this year.
d. Data Practices – Todd Schoffelman distributed a legislative summary of data
practices legislative action during the past legislative session. Todd mentioned
that the penalties for violating the MGDPA have increased. It is not anticipated
that IPAD will be sponsoring any substantial changes to the MGDPA during the
next legislative session.
e. Local Government – Dana Banwer reported that the IMLA national conference
will be held in Las Vegas from Sept. 14-17, 2008. Dana and Eileen will be attending.
f. Membership – No report.
g. Newsletter – Kim Basting is working on the next issue of the newsletter. Kim
Buechel Mesun raised the idea of putting a summary page together listing the articles contained in each issue, with a hyperlink to the on-line article. PLS
members in attendance thought this is a good idea.
